Unleashing the Killer App
by Larry Downes & Chunka Mui

Mini-review by Jim Young

This book, subtitled "Digital Strategies for Market Dominance," is my top choice for 1998.  I read this book in mid-1998 and found it to be, at that time, a brilliant and prescient book.  By page forty or forty-five, I sensed the importance of this book and added it to my list of recommended reading.  I bought, and gave away, scores of copies.  Some recipients read the book and "got it."  Others unfortunately, didn't or didn't.  Some of them became road kill on the digital highway.

As I write this mini-review eighteen months later--in the last week of the twentieth century--"Unleashing the Killer App" is as relevant as it was the day I finished reading it.  Downes and Mui include a brilliant and readable discussion of the interaction of Moore's Law, Metcalfe's Law and the economic theories of Nobel Laureate Ronald H. Coase to create a climate where every industry is in the midst or revolutionary change, brought about by technology.

On page 41, they ask us to "Think of the internet not as a network of connected computers but as the testbed for a new market economy, one that is global, continuously operating, and increasingly automating the processes of buying, selling, producing and distributing."  Unleashing the Killer App" will help you with this kind of thinking.  Get it.  Read it.  Mark it up.  Practice it.  Reread it.  Believe it.  Be a winner!
