Turned On
by Roger Dow & Susan Cook

Mini-review by Jim Young

I've been a serious and voracious reader for quite a number of years.  And, since some time in the 1980s I've kept a list of books that I highly recommend.  My rule has always been that I must read all the words of a book before adding it to my list.  In 1996, I broke that rule with this book.  Somewhere between pages seventy-five and eighty, I put it on my list, using the rationale that even if the rest of the book was worthless (which it wasn't) "Turned On" was still worth recommending.

That same year I made another change.  I named a top choice for the year.  I've continued to do so each year.  "Turned On" is my top choice for 1996.  I'm writing this mini-review on Christmas Day 1999--the last Christmas of this century--and I find "Turned On" as vital today as I found it in 1996.

"Turned On" is subtitled "Eight Vital Insights to Energize Your People, Customers and Profits."  The eight insights are:

   •  Build a strong foundation.
   •  Make every customer feel special.
   •  Have the courage to set bold goals.
   •  Make technology your servant.
   •  Measure well, act fast.
   •  Unleash the power of people.
   •  Build a strong foundation.
   •  Lead with care.

Each insight has a number of practices associated with it--a total of thirty-two.  And, each practice has a number of specific action steps that can be implemented immediately.  This book is filled with insight--and filled with action--ideas that can be put into practice immediately.  Lots of stories.  Lots of ideas.  Lots of value!
